It was with mixed emotions a year ago that we left Michigan, likely for good. We were very excited to come back to Washington DC, but we were sad to leave our friends. Adah turned one year old on our very last day in Michigan. We had a party with Cory, Malissa, Libertie and Stephanie Martin, some of our best friends in the world. We didn't want to leave them behind, but that's what we did. For all of 3.5 months. Now they're in Seattle with pretty much everybody else that we know.
But anyway, that Wednesday night was bittersweet. Our baby was a whole year old as we said goodbye to the only life she'd ever known; our little upstairs apartment and our big backyard; endless months of snow and 19-hour summer days; wonderful friends and a strange, depressed culture.
It was also the day she took her first steps, right on time, so she had that going for her, which was nice.
